Tyumen physicists created liquid adaptive microlenses

Liquid microlens

Thanks to the accommodation system of the eye, we can clearly see the surrounding objects, located from us at different distances. It can be compared with the camera lens, with which you set the necessary focus.

Physicists of the Tyumen State University managed to create an artificial analogue of the accommodative system. For this, they synthesized a special solution possessing the property of collecting in a drop under the action of light. One of the leading specialists of the University, Alexander Malyuk, reported about the unique development of Tyumen physicists at the conference in Leeds (Great Britain).

Due to the unusual properties of the obtained substance, it is possible to change the curvature of its surface, changing the intensity of illumination. So, for example, in order to reduce the diameter of the lens, you need to add light. This increases its curvature and, accordingly, the focal length is reduced. When the illumination is weakened, the processes will go “in the opposite direction.”

The range of the change in the focal length directly depends on the properties and characteristics of the solution – surface tension, vapor pressure, viscosity.

The unique development of Russian scientists will find its application not only in ophthalmology, but also in microbiology, navigation, laser and transmission systems.
